How CCIS began
Cancer Campaign In Suffolk (CCIS) is a registered charity that began as an idea in May 1998 and was officially launched the following September . The aim of the charity was to improve access to high quality information and support services to cancer patients and their carers in Suffolk. It is the only cancer charity in Suffolk where all funds raised are used to benefit people across all of Suffolk.
Under the chairmanship of Jonathan Ripman, our other trustees are Peter Archer our treasurer, Barbara Hercliffe, Stuart Jarrold, Terry Hunt, Jason Cundy, John Button, Liz McEwan, Dr. Liz Sherwin, Tim Cutler and Mark Sargeantson.
At the start of 2008, the charity had raised three-quarters of a million pounds which has been spent in support of cancer services in the county. The charity was set up following a conversation between an Ipswich Town footballer Jason Cundy, who was being treated for Testicular Cancer, and his Oncologist, about the lack of good quality accurate up-to-date information about cancer in Suffolk at the time. The founder members of the charity were aware of the generosity of patients and the public in Suffolk, but were also disappointed that a lot of the money raised locally was never used to benefit the people of Suffolk.
Led by a small group of Trustees the charity began to raise funds to support cancer services across Suffolk. It was agreed that the first major project would be a Cancer Information Centre that would become the hub of excellent cancer information and support services for the people of Suffolk. That ambition was realised in 2004 when CCIS invested £400,000 of your money and opened the CCIS Cancer Information Centre at Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust.
CCIS have also helped with the funding of a respite holiday home for cancer patients in West Suffolk, have made donations to the Macmillan Nurse Amenity Fund and have made grants to cancer patients. Recent projects include Digital Imaging Equipment for Cancer Diagnosis for use with Breast Cancer diagnosis for the East Suffolk Breast Screening service and the refurbishment of a room for the specific use of specialists and patients following the diagnosis of cancer.
Cancer Campaign in Suffolk is supported entirely by voluntary donations, we are not affiliated to any large national organisations, but exist to support the local community. Every penny donated to the campaign is spent here in Suffolk.
To continue in our quest to provide high quality cancer information and support services to the people of Suffolk we rely on the ongoing generous support from the people and local businesses in the county.
