Gemma did it for her Dad

When Gemma Whileys Dad Mike was diagnosed with cancer the family looked to The Cancer Campaign in Suffolk John LeVay Cancer Information Centre at Ipswich Hosptial for advice and support.  After Mike was told he was cancer free he again used our services on the Moving On Programme.

Gemma says.  Stood with my family, friends and boyfriend we watched others do the abseil and I was slowly gaining my confidence, feeling pretty excited, a bit nervous and adrenalin pumping!  Once I'd made my way to the top of the building I was just constantly reminding myself of the £700 I'd raised and that there was no chance I wasn't going to do it.  The most terrifying part, as I'd been warned, was leaning backwards off the 150ft building which goes against all of your natural reactions.  I made this a little bit worse by giving everyone below a wave and eyeing up my challenge!  To my surprise I bounced my way down and felt like I was down in a couple minutes. Once I was at the bottom I was overcome with emotion - the months of build up and reason I was doing it in the first place. I gave my Dad hug, I think he was more nervous and relieved than I was!  It was a proud moment, I'm happy I can say I did it.

If you have used the centre or the Moving On Programme and would like to support Gemmas fundraising efforts then please go to her justgiving page

Well the weather recently has been terrific and I’m sure has helped us all to feel more able to get out and about in this wonderful county of ours. We moved to Suffolk nearly 21 years ago to a house on top of a hill (not very handy in the snow!) 6 miles outside Woodbridge surrounded by fields and horses.   I live with my husband Jonathan son Toby when he’s home from uni and Milly our daughter who has just started her A levels and is hoping to go to Uni this September. We’re not looking forward to them both been away from home so things will be very strange in September, some people seem only too happy for their youngsters to move out I’m afraid that’s not us (perhaps we could do with some tips of how to adjust to life when their gone! Richard (editor) perhaps it’s a feature needed for your September/October edition).  Last weekend Milly and I had a ‘girlie Saturday’ starting with a walk along the Ipswich waterfront with coffee looking over the marina at the boats getting ready for a days sailing. Everything sparkling in the morning sunshine it was a terrific start to the weekend. I then took Mil for a little pampering at Flawless Image on Fore Street to help ease away the stresses of A levels followed by a hair restyle and of course a little retail therapy  a perfect start although I’m not sure either my feet or wallet could manage it every weekend. We made our way home watched a movie and everything was well with the world.
Saturday evening has always been a time for a special meal I love to cook and entertain friends so early evening either me or all of us prepare the evening meal together with a starter main and either pudding or cheese to follow with a good bottle of wine (its very useful been married to a wine merchant at this point)& good conversation just the four of us have been known to chat into the early hours of the morning although it takes me longer to recover from late nights than it use to (I must be getting old or something) Sundays are relaxing reading the papers having a traditional Sunday lunch followed by a walk in the countryside.

Anna-Maries Marathon Effort

"What an amazing experience.  The London Marathon was absolutely incredible.

I was very nervous before the day of the race, as I was nursing a foot injury and to be perfecly honest, I was really unsure if I would make 1 mile, let alone 26 miles.  My husband reassured me the night before that adrenaline and nerves would without doubt get me through the race.... and he was absolutely right!  I have had such amazing support and generous donations from so many people, I was not going to give it up without at least trying!  I had a Cancer Campaign in Suffolk running vest on with brilliant large branding and my name on so no-one could miss me, which was just how it should be!  I was fortunate to get lots of random supporters reading and calling out my name, which lifted my spirits and energy levels more than I could have ever imagined.  The feeling of running up the Mall and crossing the finishing line was very satisfying and receiving my medal gave me a great sense of achievement ~ and all in aid of such a good cause; The Cancer Campaign in Suffolk.  I was quickly asked by my family if I would do it again, whilst still out of breath, I said no, but within days, I had changed my mind and would be up for the challenge again!... to the point that I have entered the ballot for 2012!

Thank you for the opportunity and a massive thank you to all those who donated and supported me.

With cash donations; my total is £3,000 and that is without adding on the Gift Aid, so I am really chuffed.
