Coast to Coast

Coast to Coast Bike Ride

Brothers Chris and Robert Needham wanted to say thank you for the wonderful help and advice their father Ben received from Cancer Campaign in Suffolk when being treated for prostate cancer. So the decision to cycle 150 miles coast to coast, Whitehaven to Sunderland seemed suitably challenging and a way to get fit in the process. Friend Keith Hallams’ family has also been touched by cancer to another willing recruit joined the ride.

Chris says “My brother and I wanted to raise funds via a sponsored event but we also wanted to be challenged and this coast to coast cycle ride was defiantly that!” “Unfortunately, Keith lost his father at a young age to cancer so it seemed only right that we all do this for our Dads.”

For the final 10 miles of the ride the group were joined by Chris and Roberts father and also Roberts daughter Olivia which made it a very emotional finish.

It looks like the sponsored ride will raise over £2500 which is a fantastic effort.

London Marathon 2010

Congratulations to Nicki Ramsey, who took part in the London Marathon.

Despite injury problems during training she still managed to complete the run and raise sponsorship.  Nicki works in the radiotherapy department at Ipswich Hospital so can see first hand how the charity helps people with cancer, especially the cancer information centre.

Paris Marathon April 2010

Ian Baird has raised more than £1600 in sponsorship so far for Cancer Campaign in Suffolk, after completing his first marathon at the tender age of 64.  Money is still coming in and Ian expects the final total to be over £2500 which is fantastic.  Ian says " I was never going for a time that would make any of the elite runners nervous, just crossing the finish line was enough for me."

Ian decided to run the marathon and raise funds for CCIS after seeing the wonderful support the charity gave his wife when she was being treated for cancer.

Farlingaye School Dress Down Day March 2010

Terri Lee a former pupil at Farlingaye School decided to work with her old school to raise funds for the Caring for Me project in association with Cancer Campaign in Suffolk.  Terri was diagnosed with cancer when she was only 19 and wanted to raise funds and awareness for cancer sufferers locally.  £1000 was raised via a dress down day at Farlingaye School and an additional £500 was donated by the Bernard Matthews company as the school has worked so well raising funds themselves.  BOOTIFUL

Paris Half Marathon

On Sunday 7th March, Charlie Mackinlay and Tracey Ball got a spring in their step and ran the Paris Half Marathon in aid of Cancer Campaign in Suffolk.  Both have been training hard through the snow and rain, proving that they were dedicated to their challenge. Their dedication was further shown by not being able to celebrate in Paris after the mamouth run but instead,  they were straight back on the coach to Suffolk.

Charlie tells us "Sunday was a great experience, but very very tough!  It was a lovely sunny day with a very cold wind.  We both got past the finishing line in good time, I've attached our recorded times below:

The run took us from the Chateau De Vincennes, along avenue Daumesnil to the Place De La Bastille, turning at Hotel De Ville, alongside the River Seine and around Parc Floral back to the finishing line."

** Hots Hats and Headwear **

Tuesday 2nd March 2010 saw our very first Hot Hats and Headwear Workshop at the John LeVay Cancer Information Centre.  We attended at the Information Centre armed with scarves, material, hats, broaches and sewing machines to make individual headwear for anybody to wear, especially those suffering with hair loss through cancer treatments.  The event went off extremely well, and those who visited us tell us that they enjoyed experimenting with different fabrics and accessories.  This will be a monthly workshop, held on the first Tuesday of each month.

Clydesdale Bank supports Cancer Campaign in Suffolk

John Button, Trustee of Cancer Campaign in Suffolk, was presented with a cheque for £850 from Neil Keveren of Clydesdale Bank. Clydesdale Bank donated £850 to Cancer Campaign in Suffolk thanks to two successful charity auctions when over 300 historic and collectable banknotes were sold.

Staff at the Bank’s Financial Solutions Centre in Moseley’s Farm, Bury St Edmunds, chose to support the Cancer Campaign in Suffolk as part of an ongoing commitment to local charities and community groups.

Mel Barker, Managing Partner of the Suffolk Business Team, said: “As a bank we are always keen to support local charities and to make a difference to the community we live in. This unique charity auction has allowed us to do just that.  As a team we are delighted to be supporting the Cancer Campaign in Suffolk, which makes a real difference to cancer patients within our area.”

In total, £180,000 was raised from the two auctions, which saw a range of collectable banknotes go under the hammer. These included limited edition and antique notes, as well as complete uncut sheets of the new family of Scottish banknotes. The money has been donated to various charities chosen by bank staff across the UK.

2009

October 21st 2009, saw the 5th Anniversary of the John LeVay Cancer Information Centre. More than 150 people passed through the doors during the day to take part in a Public Tea Party between 10 am and 3 pm and then we held a Wine and Canapes reception in the evening.  Ipswich Town Footballer, Carlos Edwards came to cut our birthday cake which had been made by the Students at Suffolk New College.  Our Birthday Raffle raised just over £500 which was only made possible through the generous donations from local businesses.  Here are a few photographs of the day which we hope you'll enjoy....
